Barbara Jean Poitras

Barbara Jean Poitras

Born June 20th, 1938 in Vancouver, B.C. Barbara Jean was the middle child of Ezra (Mac) & Ellen Petrie. Her eldest sister Mary (Elliott) deceased and younger sibling Janet (Barrett) filled their family’s home full of joy & life.

Barbara attended King George High School and was active with young womens’ sororities. After finishing school, Barbara entered the work force in administration for The Canadian Pacific Railway Co. in downtown Vancouver, and then later on with 7-UP Beverage & Bottling Company.

At that time (1962) she met the love of her life Larry Wayne Poitras. They became husband & wife in the summer of June 1964.  Barbara and Larry celebrated the birth of their beautiful daughter Penny Jean on February 13, 1965.  It was Barbara & Larry’s dream to raise a family away from the urban sprawl of Greater Vancouver and find a rural quality of life that existed on Vancouver Island where much of their holiday vacation time was spent camping & fishing.

A new adventure began for Barbara that brought them to Duncan.  Barbara made many friends in the Cowichan Valley and worked for The Cowichan News Leader.

Barbara is survived by her son Robert (Lianne), daughter Penny (Tim): grandchildren: Peter, Benjamin, Christopher and Ellen; niece Jennifer Nielsen and her children: Zachary, Matthew, Jacob and Arianna; niece Kathryn  Farvolden and her sons: Andre and Matt.

A new chapter opened when Barbara & Larry, through their Church, took up the challenge of raising & fostering 4 children Gary, Kenneth, Candi & Chato, whom are living full and active lives today.  We celebrate our mother’s life & her accomplishments.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Barbara at a future date.
