Qualicum Beach Mayor Brian Wiese offers New Year’s message

'I think great things await us in 2019'

I think the community of Qualicum Beach has much to look forward to in 2019.

It is my hope that 2019 will see important positive steps toward the improved quality of life for residents. I would like this to include the advancement of the East Village Community Concept. East Village should hopefully see agreements, plans and the eventual construction of important new market housing and rental options for the community core.

It would hopefully also see an agreement for the construction and opening of this Town’s first micro-brewery.

I am looking forward to the advancement and completion of the Memorial project.

This project will include a completed separated path that connects our waterfront to the Uptown core; improved intersection safety enhancements; the completion of our first phase of the waterfront master plan green shore to address the impacts of sea level rise; as well as some key environmental mitigations and improvements with the replacement of a section of a sewer line along the ocean front and the reconstruction of the historic Beach Creek estuary.

In planning, I am looking forward to seeing effective community outreach for the visioning of the former St. Andrews Lodge site which is scheduled to become a community park.

I am looking forward to seeing improvements to our airport and some additional visioning for the engagement of the airport lands. I am hopeful that we will get some positive results from our grant application for a new roundabout at the intersection of Village Way and the 19A.

I think this community is ready to see better planning and action to continue addressing future housing needs throughout 2019 and beyond.

From discussion through to construction, finding options that will allow all ages, from young through to retirees, the ability to find a place to call home in Qualicum Beach has to be a big part of the year ahead of us.

This will undoubtedly include dialogue, looking at partnerships, engaging Town land and privately held land as well as a reconsideration of housing options and opportunities within our community.

Last but not least I am looking forward to some heavy lifting, community dialogue and possible partnerships with other levels of government to help address the concerns that have been raised regarding the increasing healthcare needs in the Oceanside area. I think great things await us in 2019.
