Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the Grand Forks and District Public Library, there are now eight brand new computers for the public to use. The installation marks the first time this decade in which the library has seen new computers for public use.
As with all non-profit organisations, money is tight at the public library, and with the budget being maxed out every year just with operational costs, new computers have not been a priority.
That is, until the deadline for free Windows 10 installation was reached this summer. After installing the new operating system on the old computers, it was found to conflict too much with software necessary specifically for library computers. When basic functions slowed to a crawl, Director Cari Lynn Postnikoff knew that it was time to stop putting off the purchase of new computers—but where would the money come from?
Previously, the Friends of the Grand Forks and District Public Library have tended to make several smaller purchases each year for the library, funding things like DVDs, furniture and children’s items. Since those items weren’t especially necessary this year, Postnikoff made the big request for new computers, which was generously granted.
Now, patrons can enjoy the updated operating system, a newer version of Microsoft Office, and can choose to do their Internet browsing through Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or the super-private TOR (The Onion Router) browser. It’s a very exciting time at the library!
Curious about who exactly the “Friends” are? In cooperation with the library Board and the library director, the Friends support the library through a variety of volunteer activities and fundraising. They promote the use of the library and focus the attention of the public on the library and its services. The Friends of the Library receive and encourage gifts, endowments and bequests for the library, and are always looking for new members.
