A five-term Comox councillor, volunteer Comox Fire Rescue member and long-serving Rotary member has died.
During the Jan. 20 strategic planning committee meeting, Mayor Russ Arnott made the announcement about John Marinus’ passing and held a moment of silence with fellow councillors and staff. The flags at the town hall and the Comox fire hall are being flown at half-mast in his honour.
Marinus served for 15 years on town council, and in addition to 37 years as a volunteer with the fire department, he was an active volunteer with community groups such as Rotary, Probus and the Legion.
He was presented the Freedom of the Town award in 2017 by then-Mayor Paul Ives, the highest honour the town can bestow to any citizen or organization.
“John was an incredible, hard-working ambassador for the Town of Comox and the numerous organizations he volunteered for over many years,” noted Arnott in a statement. “He was a one-of-a-kind gentleman and will be missed by so many. On behalf of the Town of Comox Council and staff, I extend my condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
