The Chilliwack Fire Department is in the process of recruiting paid on-call (POC) firefighters.
POC firefighters are paid an hourly wage when they attend Monday night practice sessions and are called to respond to emergencies.
Applicants must be at least 19 years old and a high school graduate (or GED certificate holder), living in Chilliwack.
Candidates should be physically and medically fit, with normal vision and hearing. A medical exam and fitness testing will be required.
“Diverse, challenging, rewarding are a few words used to describe the role of a paid on-call firefighter, as they are called upon by the citizens of Chilliwack to respond and mitigate emergencies and non-emergency situations safely and effectively,” said Kathy Laynes from the Chilliwack Fire Department. “In preparation to meet community needs, POC candidates participate in a comprehensive training program based on a mixture of online and practical training.”
During POC recruit camp, candidates learn to become proficient in self-contained-breathing apparatus (SCBA), ladders, ropes and knots, search and rescue, fire behavior, water supply, fire attack, electrical emergencies, hazmat mitigation, and much more.
“Today’s firefighters serve their community and the residents of Chilliwack by being leaders and partners in all areas of emergency response,” Laynes said.
Applications are being accepted until August 27th. If you are interested, visit the City’s website at www.chilliwack.com/fire or contact the Chilliwack Fire Department at 604-792-8713.
