No one was injured after an "altercation" that led to a police-involved shooting in Newton on Tuesday evening (March 11), the Surrey Police Service reports.
At about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit was in the area of 120 Street and 64 Avenue on an unrelated investigation when SPOSU officers had an altercation with a male suspect after he allegedly attempted to steal from the officers, an SPS press release notes.
During that altercation, a member of the SPOSU fired their gun, but police say no police or members of the public were injured.
A Black Press freelancer on scene said witnesses at the scene reported seeing a person running across 120th Street from a shopping complex on the Delta side, with a possible undercover police officer following with a firearm in hand.
Surrey Police Service's Frontline Investigation Support Unit is leading the investigation.
A man was arrested and is currently in custody, police say.
