A 67-year-old driver was taken to hospital following a crash on Vernon’s Kalamalka Lake Road that razed a hydro pole and closed the road for several hours on Tuesday.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services and Vernon Fire Rescue Services attended the single-vehicle collision around 4 p.m. March 12.

RCMP media relations officer Const. Chris Terleski says a pickup truck veered off the road and collided with a hydro pole, causing extensive damage to the pole and leaving power lines on the ground.

Due to the potential risk caused by the downed lines, emergency crews maintained a safe distance and closed the road to traffic until BC Hydro crews attended and rendered the scene safe. The road was reopened around 8 p.m.

The cause of the collision is believed to be medical in nature, Terleski said.

The driver was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash resulted in a power outage that affected 2,230 people.
