The Surrey fire department’s Technical Response Team rescued two construction workers who were found unresponsive down in a hole in a construction site at 104 Avenue and 132 Street in Whalley on Thursday morning.

Paramedics rushed the revived men to Surrey Memorial Hospital in ambulances. The Surrey RCMP and FortisBC were also on the scene and WorkSafeBC is looking into the incident.

Assistant Fire Chief Ben Dirksen was not immediately able to confirm if the men had been in a ventilation shaft for a parkade. “It was a building under construction,” he said. Firefighters were alerted shortly after 11 a.m.

“They were applying a primer and were overcome by fumes. Our crews ventilated the area and the crews were able to climb the ladder and get themselves out, self extricate.”
