1. Close to 800 dancers from more than a dozen Surrey schools will hit the stage during Breakout 2016, an annual competition hosted by the Surrey Secondary Dance Teachers’ Association. The action happens Saturday (Jan. 16) at Panorama Ridge Secondary from 1 to 5 p.m., at 13220 64th Ave. Dance classes and teams will compete in several categories, including hip-hop, contemporary, jazz, stage, break, bhangra and Bollywood. On top of all that, the show-closing Break Battle will feature some of the region’s best breakers. For more event details, including ticket info, click on

2. Also on Saturday (Jan. 16), Canada’s new Finance Minister, Bill Morneau, makes his inaugural speech to the Surrey Board of Trade at Aria Banquet & Convention Centre (12350 Pattullo Pl., Surrey). The breakfast event is sure to shed light on the new Liberal government’s many pre-election promises, with a focus on Surrey concerns such as transit, health, education and social housing. 3. If money and time don’t allow you to travel much, an event next Wednesday (Jan. 20) offers a chance to live vicariously through North Deltans Rick and Chris Millikan. The longtime travel writers present “From Berlin to Prague: Cruising the Elbe River,” their look at picture-perfect cruising through East Germany and the Czech Republic. “The slide presentation (at George Mackie Library) highlights Berlin and Prague as well as less-visited towns such as Wittenburg, Potsdam, Baroque Dresden and others along the Elbe River,” Chris told the Now. She adds the free, 90-minute event is suitable for a wide audience – fellow travellers, history buffs and the curious. Start time is 7 p.m. at 8440 112th St, North Delta.
