Chesapeake Shores film crews returning to Nanaimo in June

Filming occurred in downtown Nanaimo for the Hallmark series May 15-18

Film crews for Hallmark Channel’s Chesapeake Shores series set up in locations in downtown Nanaimo and the Brechin area last week.

Matt Drake, producer for Chesapeake Shores S2 Productions Inc., said Nanaimo has a “city feel” and areas in the community can be used to double as Chicago, New York and Baltimore locations.

Filming locations included the Modern Café, sections of Commercial Street and areas near the Departure Bay ferry terminal.

The cast and crew headed to the Parksville-Qualicum after wrapping up in Nanaimo. Drake said filming is planned in Nanaimo, Qualicum Beach, Nanoose and Parksville this season.

Drake said crews will be back in Nanaimo in about two weeks, although details still need to be confirmed, to shoot more scenes for the second season of the Hallmark Channel series.

Season 1 of Chesapeake Shores was one of the most-watched series on the Hallmark Channel.

“It’s great. We were overjoyed at the ratings for the show,” said Drake. “We have such a fantastic cast and the locations we shoot for the series is becoming a character on its own.”

The TV series is based on the book by Sherryl Woods. According to Hallmark’s website, the multi-generational story follows Abby O’Brien, played by Meghan Ory, a divorced mother of twin daughters. She travels from New York to her hometown of Chesapeake Shores.
