THANK YOU to Sooke Elementary School for posting light-hearted jokes and humourous sayings on its school sign. It always brings a smile and good feelings, even in the worst traffic congestion.

BOUQUETS to the man who throws his grass clippings over the fence onto the Juan de Fuca Trail that runs between the end of Otter Ridge Drive and West Coast Road. It’s so nice of you to leave an ugly mess that keeps piling up. We are so lucky to have such a thoughtful person in our neighbourhood, and the CRD looks the other way and condones your selfish behaviour.

BEEF TO THE PERSON who thinks domestic cats should be allowed to run free and that neighbours should “deal with it.” Why is it OK for your cat to defecate in their yard when their dog or horse, for that matter, can’t defecate in yours? Controlling your cat is your problem – if you can’t figure out how you shouldn’t own one. And, given your naivety, you might research the environmental effects of domestic cats preying on birds.

A SPRING BOUQUET to Scot and Leah who run several businesses and do their best to do the right thing. As a tourism-based community the locals bare the responsibility of supporting our dining establishments through the winters so we can all thrive during the summer. Suggestion? Try to work in a “night-out” each month at the very least. Get to know the marvelous places we have to eat in this town!

BEEF (digested) to the beefer who defends cats that run wild, pooping in other people’s backyards and flower beds and killing birds. If you can’t control your cats, keep them inside. Why should other people deal with your cat’s excrement? As to the birds your cats kill, we’re having fewer and fewer birds, which means more and more insects. Everybody, including you, has to deal with it.

MANY THANKS to those who can get straight to the point when telling a story someone is only listening to out of politeness or boredom.

A BIG BEEF to dog owners that let their dogs poop in front of our hedge on Whiffen Spit Road. I have to mow that grass, and I am not happy when I run over it with my mower and then step in it because I didn’t see it. Pick up after your dogs!

A WALLOPING PILE of steamy dung to the driver of the little blue “race car” who thinks he owns the roads around Sooke and they are for him alone. News flash! One – There are rules, you have to share. Two - Being mannerly about it isn’t a bad thing. Three - Flipping me the bird won’t get you anywhere any faster. And Four, Driving up on my side in the same lane won’t end well. Grow the “F” UP! You’re an adult, behave like one or hand in your license!

BOUQUET to my kind neighbour Lindsay. Had you not kept a keen ear, no one would have heard my scared little Millie crying in the rain. She’s now warm, safe and full of purrs, thanks to you. You’re a gem.

BEEF TO FOLKS that complain about noisy motorcycles! If you can’t hear them then you probably can’t see them either! I’d rather be startled by a loud motorcycle than be responsible for running one over!

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU to anyone who takes the time to smile for no reason at all.

A WELL-DESERVED BEEF for Barry Marine and his sign. You think you are spreading the truth, but all I read is hate. Think about the children reading your signs. Prominent road signs are hard to miss. Great job getting all your friends to write praising your “great work.”

BEEF TO FOLKS who complain about noisy motorcycles. If you can’t hear them, you probably can’t see them either. I’d rather be startled by a loud motorcycle than be responsible for running one over!

BIG AND BEAUTIFUL BOUQUETto Tina and Sunny, the hardworking cashiers at Village Food Markets. They are very polite, helpful and friendly. My family and I love coming to the grocery store.

ALBERTA BEEF-SIZED BEEF to all the speeders, especially on roads with no sidewalks, specifically in private residential developments like trailer parks. Slow down!

MY BOUQUET goes to Mother Nature, who endlessly supplies sunshine for all the backyard nudists in Sooke. I don’t know how many there are, but given some of the large properties in Sooke, I expect there are quite a few. Mine is on a cul-de-sac and surrounded by many mature trees, perfect for this innocent pastime.

A HEARTY BEEF to the school crossing guard who needlessly stops rush hour traffic to let one person cross. Yes, the safety of children is important, but she could control crossings so that six or more people cross rather than holding up traffic multiple times within a minute for a single person. Due to the ill-timed stops, it can take five minutes to travel 200 metres.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH is a fundamental pillar of democracy. Beef to those who fail to recognize this fact. No freedom of speech = No freedom of thought = No democracy.

KUDOS to all Canadian citizens who set an example and uphold freedom of speech.

BEEF TO B.C. FERRIES for increasing cash payment of ferry fares at the ferry terminals. Why should we subsidize those who pre-book online and get a discount with credit cards? This will not reduce congestion at ferry terminals. People who pay cash at the terminal booth should get a discount, not be penalized with an additional fee.

BOUQUET to an unknown person with a tremendously big heart who dropped off a food gift card at a local grocery store with the intent of a wonderful person working there as a cashier to select someone in need. I was selected. I lack the words to express how much this means to me. Thank you.

BEEF TO THE BEEFER about high food prices, saying we should get the government to step in. It’s frightening to know there are people who don’t realize the government is creating these high prices with its increasing taxes on everything. On top of that, they’re giving themselves salary raises this year.
