“Vancouver’s Island, the Hudson’s Bay Company’s establishment.” This engraving appeared in the Illustrated London News in August 1848. The image shows the bastion and palisades of Fort Victoria. The Beaver is anchored in the harbour and a First Nations settlement is visible to the left.

Saanich history: Harpooner brought settlers to Island

Among the passengers aboard the Harpooner were several Scottish labourers hired by Captain Walter Colquhoun Grant.
